If you search for the best Indian restaurant in Iceland, you will find several good options. Indian Food Box is proud to be one of the Indian restaurants people talk about, review and return to.

Our story is not about being the biggest or fanciest restaurant. It is about bringing a little piece of India to Iceland, with food that feels warm, familiar and full of heart.

A Crazy Idea During COVID

Indian Food Box opened its first takeaway location in Reykjavík in October 2020, during the COVID period. Looking back, opening a food business during a global pandemic was not the easiest decision.

Restrictions were changing, people were staying home and nobody knew what the next month would bring. The first months were difficult. Every order felt important. Every customer mattered.

Thankfully, our customers had other plans. They supported us, reviewed us, recommended us and helped the business grow.

From that small takeaway kitchen, Indian Food Box has grown into a brand with a Reykjavík takeaway, a Kópavogur dine-in restaurant and a story built one meal at a time.

Home Away From Home

The philosophy behind Indian Food Box has always been simple: Home Away From Home.

Many of our dishes are inspired by Indian home cooking, traditional spices and recipes that remind us of family meals. We like to call it grandma-style cooking: food made with patience, warmth and respect for flavour.

Whether you are from India, Iceland, Europe, North America or anywhere else, our goal is the same: to serve Indian food that feels welcoming, comforting and honest.

Building a Reputation One Meal at a Time

Indian Food Box did not grow overnight. It grew through customers, reviews, repeat orders, word of mouth and consistent food.

300+Google reviews
4.8★Approx. Google rating
4.9★Approx. Tripadvisor rating
100,000+Meals served

Those numbers matter, but the real reward is when customers say the food reminded them of home, made their evening better or became part of their Iceland trip.

European Street Food Awards Finalist – Three Years Running

One of our proudest achievements has been being selected as a finalist at the European Street Food Awards for three consecutive years.

Our AB Samosa Chaat became one of the dishes that helped more people discover Indian Food Box. It is colourful, bold, spicy, sweet, tangy and full of Indian street-food energy.

Not bad for a humble samosa.

Our Most Popular Indian Dishes

Every restaurant has its stars. These are some of ours:

Butter Chicken

Rich, creamy, comforting and one of our best-loved dishes. For many guests, Butter Chicken is the first dish that makes them fall in love with Indian food.

Chicken Biryani

Fragrant, filling and packed with flavour. Biryani has become one of our strongest dishes, especially at the Kópavogur restaurant.

AB Samosa Chaat

Crispy samosa, chickpeas, chutneys, spices, yogurt and crunch. A street-food favourite and one of our signature dishes.

Dal Makhani

Slow-cooked black lentils with butter, spices and patience. A deep, comforting vegetarian dish with real North Indian soul.

IFB Dhaba Chicken

Inspired by Indian roadside dhaba cooking, made with bold spices and ghee for rich flavour.

Nihari

A slow-cooked traditional dish made with time, patience and special spice blends. Not fast food — real comfort food.

The Dal Makhani and Nihari Story

Some dishes need explanation before they become popular. When we introduced Dal Makhani and Nihari, many customers in Iceland had never tried them before.

Instead of only advertising them, we shared tasting portions and explained the story behind the dishes. Slowly, more people understood the flavour, tradition and comfort behind them.

Sometimes the best way to sell food is simply to let people taste it.

Not Every Idea Was a Winner

Restaurants often talk about success, but experiments and failures also matter. One of our ideas was a healthy Makhana Salad. Makhana, also known as fox nuts, is popular in India and has nutritional benefits.

We thought customers would love it. Instead, many people saw it as an expensive popcorn-style salad. It did not become popular, but it taught us an important lesson: good ideas still need the right market, timing and explanation.

A Proud Moment in Kópavogur

A major milestone came when we opened our dine-in restaurant in Kópavogur. The occasion became even more special when His Excellency R. Ravindra, Ambassador of India to Iceland, officially opened the restaurant and offered his best wishes to the team.

For a small takeaway that started during COVID, it was a moment that reminded us how far the journey had come.

More Than Just a Restaurant

Indian Food Box has always been connected to community. We have supported cricket in Iceland through sponsorship, meals and local involvement, because food and sport both bring people together.

Restaurants should not only serve communities. They should be part of them.

So, Is Indian Food Box the Best Indian Restaurant in Iceland?

That decision belongs to our guests. What we can say is that Indian Food Box was built with courage, consistency, family recipes and real hospitality.

We opened during COVID, served more than 100,000 meals, earned hundreds of reviews, reached the European Street Food Awards finals three years running and introduced many guests to dishes like Dal Makhani, Nihari and AB Samosa Chaat.

Indian Food Box was created to be a home away from home — a place where Indian food is cooked with care and guests feel welcome.
