Indian Food Shop is the ingredient-service side of the Indian Food Factory family. Based beside our Reykjavík takeaway at Langirimi, it was created for people who want Indian spices, staples and cooking support without buying more than they need.
A restaurant born during COVID
Our story began in October 2020, during one of the hardest periods the hospitality industry had faced. Three Indian friends with hotel and restaurant backgrounds suddenly found the world around them changing. Instead of waiting for normal life to return, we decided to create something of our own.
We took a brave bank loan, invested our savings and opened a small takeaway at Langirimi 21 in Reykjavík. That takeaway became Indian Food Box: a small kitchen built around the food we missed from home—slow-cooked curries, familiar spices and recipes shaped by our families and childhood memories.

As Indian Food Box grew, guests began asking us a different kind of question: Where can I find the ingredients to make this at home? Indian families, students, travellers and Icelandic home cooks wanted rice, lentils, spices, masalas and familiar snacks—but they did not always need a large packet or have time to search several shops.
For a family staying in Iceland for a short visit, a 500-gram packet of every spice can be expensive and wasteful. For someone cooking an Indian dish for the first time, knowing which ingredients to buy can be confusing. Indian Food Shop developed as a practical answer: help people get the right ingredients, in sensible quantities, for the food they actually want to cook.

The goal is not simply to sell a product—it is to build a bridge between Indian food, Iceland and the people who enjoy both.
Built next door, not apart
The signs for Indian Food Box and Indian Food Shop stand beside one another at Langirimi for a reason. The shop did not come from a boardroom or a distant retail concept. It grew beside the kitchen, from real conversations with guests and from our everyday experience of sourcing and cooking Indian ingredients in Iceland.
After five years, our journey expanded with the opening of the Indian Food Box restaurant in Kópavogur in 2025. Yet Langirimi remains where the first chapter began—and where the restaurant and ingredient service still meet.
